He worked in William Walker’s Ultrasound lab on projects that included developing and experimentally validating an algorithm capable of detecting sub-pixel tissue movement between image frames.
He went on to join the Department of Bioengineering at the University of Washington (UW) as a National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellow, earning his PhD in 2013. Ryan was a member of Eric Seibel’s Human Photonics Laboratory where he collaborated with VisionGate Inc. to develop a three-dimensional microscope for the early detection of lung cancer. His research focused on developing a computer simulation of the microscope to analyze system errors and improve the microscope’s overall implementation.
In the summer of 2012, he was awarded a NSF and ASEE Engineering Innovation Fellowship to analyze microscope aberrations at GE Healthcare. Ryan also earned a Technology Entrepreneurship Certificate from the Foster School of Business at the University of Washington, where he took MBA classes in finance, strategy, and marketing.
Ryan has a strong interest in the commercialization of biomedical imaging devices that drastically improve health outcomes. He reports that the early months of the Fellowship have reinforced his ambition to develop low cost solutions that would directly affect people’s lives. “Whether it be cancer or regular bacterial diseases,” he said, “the thing I’m really interested in doing is building a device and trying to either get it into a clinic or into someone’s home, to affect whether or not they’re diagnosed earlier, or to improve their overall disease progression.”
