A native of Madrid, Germán obtained his Telecommunications Engineering title from Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Spain) and his MSc. in Interactive Systems Engineering degree from Kungliga Tekniska Högskolan (Stockholm, Sweden), both in 2006. His MSc. dissertation on Kinematic Tracking and Activity Recognition obtained the Best Master Thesis in Artificial Intelligence Award given by the Swedish Artificial Intelligence Society.
After graduation, he joined the robotics laboratory of Brown University (RI, USA), under the supervision of Professor Jenkins. In 2010 he led a team of six researchers to the final round of the DIADEM challenge and received an award “for their deeper potential, more original approach and ultimate scalability of the proposed solution”. In 2011 Dr. González obtained his PhD. in Computer Science from École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (Switzerland), under the supervision of Professor Fua. His dissertation dealt with the design of algorithms to automatically detect and delineate neuronal structures in noisy image stacks.
Germán is a member of the first class of M+Visión Fellows, with interests ranging from computer-aided diagnosis to cancer detection techniques. Of his experience, Germán said, “This is a fellowship for people who want to have impact, a lot of success in their academic career—but that might not be all they want. They want the possibility to change, and the possibility to put it in the hands of who are really practicing medicine.”
