Bevin Lin earned her BS in Chemistry from the University of California (UC), Santa Barbara. After graduating, she joined the New Technologies Engineering Division at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory before pursuing her PhD in Biomedical Engineering at UC Davis. She was awarded a National Science Foundation Center for Biophotonics Science and Technology scholarship to conduct medical photonic research for early cancer detection. During this time, she established collaboration with Olympus Medical Inc. to explore autofluorescence (AF) endomicroscopy methods, co-authored a spectral micro-imaging patent, and developed a prototype that successfully acquired AF images parallel to histology.
Dr. Lin also received an award to complete the UC Davis Graduate School of Management Business Development Intensive Program. Seeking an international perspective, she accepted a post-doctorate appointment at the National University of Singapore. Her research produced the first application of parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) coupled with excitation emission matrix (EEM) AF spectroscopy for early-stage nasopharyngeal carcinoma detection.
Update, Autumn 2015:
Current position: Research Scientist and Lab Manager in the Biomechatronics group, MIT Media Lab
“I’m working on tissue diagnostics and imaging that help to assess the human-machine interface. If bionic devices cannot be attached to the human body, their benefit is lost.”
“In my time as a Fellow, I learned that recognizing unmet needs and having support and resources to pursue creativity in developing solutions is key to innovation.”
