PROJECTS
Aurélien Bourquard was born in Meyrin, Switzerland, in 1985. He received his MSc degree in microengineering in 2008 from the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), Switzerland, and his PhD in 2013 with the Biomedical Imaging Group, EPFL, under the supervision of Prof. Michael Unser.
His doctoral research expertise includes inverse problems related to image superresolution and digital holography, algorithm design, and computational optics. Aurélien’s current interests include the fields of signal and image processing and translational biomedical research in general. He has been part of the Madrid-MIT M+Visión Fellowship program since July 2013.
So far Aurélien is a member of Fellows Team Scolio. The goal of the scoliosis project is to provide therapy for scoliosis patients based on wearable electronics.
“Being between several fields was always interesting to me. To some extent during my PhD work I had some projects that gave me a taste of that. Some projects were a bit multidisciplinary to some extent, but we didn’t have interactions with medical doctors and clinicians. It was something I was looking for.”
Aurélien says that his experience as a researcher and engineer led him to seek out “a more complete overview of the entire biomedical field,” and that the intensive clinical rotations and classes at the onset of the fellowship were a good start. “Given my background in engineering and research, I could really grasp the lessons of clinical practice, what are the current challenges to solve.”
Aurélien was drawn to M+Visión by the opportunity to conduct fruitful research and to collaborate in an interdisciplinary environment, and so far, the program has delivered.
“I especially like the fluidity of ideas, the interactions we get here, the enthusiasm, and also the taste for taking risks in projects so we can have a very multidisciplinary project without fear of taking risks.”
